When an increase in whale entanglements threatened Oregon’s most valuable commercial fishery (worth more than $70 million annually) Oregon State University (OSU) researchers joined forces with state and community partners to address the crisis through collaborative, science-based solutions.
Led by Dr. Leigh Torres, Ms. Amanda Gladics, Dr. Solène Derville, Dr. Wickman, and Mr. Craig Hayslip, the OSU team partnered with Troy Buell, Kelly Corbett, and Brittany Harrington of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), along with a broad coalition of stakeholders, to protect both whales and the fishing industry.
